| Honey Bear Acorn Squash
 - Fruit size: 12 to 16 oz
- Matures: 75 to 80 days
Bred at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, this 2009 All America Selections Winner hybrid squash is perfect for pots and small gardens. The squash has exceptional sweetness and flavor. Plants bear pretty fruits on bush-type growth that takes up about as much room as a zucchini plant—maybe a 4- to 5- foot circle in warm climates. Each plant should bear 3 to 5 squash. The fruit are such a dark green that they look almost black; inside, the yellow flesh is arguably the best-tasting acorn squash around. Each small fruit can weigh about a pound and is ideal for baking and serving "in the half shell." Sometimes, at the end of the season, acorn squash plants can succumb to powdery mildew so that the fruit doesn’t mature properly, but this is not a problem with Honey Bear because plants are tolerant to the disease. Space transplants 4 feet apart. |
