  • Head size: 8 to 12 inches (loose-leaf type)
  • Matures: 45 days

First introduced in 1985, Red Sails is known for its large open "head" of loose leaves up to a foot across that deepens in color as it matures. For full-sized plants, space 18 inches apart.

Nutritional Information

Flavorful red leaf lettuce will not only add color to your salads but a healthy amount of fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin K. The high water content (about 95%) and low-calorie count makes this and all lettuces a healthy diet choice, with the darker lettuces such as red leaf carrying more nutrients than the lighter colored ones. The red pigment in red leaf lettuce contains the antioxidants beta-carotene, which may reduce the risk of developing cataracts, and lutein, important for both eye and skin health.
